Why is Empathetic Leadership Important Today?

Empathy is the ability to relate to what another person is going through. It involves feeling compassion and figuratively placing yourself in their situation. Being empathetic allows you to connect with someone on a deeper level than just “feeling bad” for them. In today’s climate, being in a leadership position makes having the ability to be empathetic more necessary than ever before.

Sympathy Versus Empathy

Being a genuinely empathetic leader requires certain abilities, the most important of which is exhibiting a deep level of genuine compassion and understanding. Paying lip service and taking part in superficial conversations have no place here. The difference between being sympathetic to someone’s plight and being empathetic is based on perspective: being sympathetic involves looking at another person’s circumstances from your perspective and with your own opinions. Being empathetic involves stepping outside of yourself and looking at the situation from the other person’s perspective, as in the saying, “stepping into someone else’s shoes.”

Empathy and Leadership

An empathetic leader can mean all the difference between success and failure in any setting. In the business world, it can mean the growth or destruction of a company. Anyone who has ever been in a leadership position knows that the motivation of a team of workers is directly related to job performance. Employees want to feel that they are more than just cogs in a wheel. They want to be seen and acknowledged as human beings, especially those in management positions.

A good leader who wants to be seen as genuinely empathetic will take the time to connect with workers, one-on-one and individually, on a regular basis. Chatting about both any work-related issues and any issues in their lives outside of the workplace lets employees know that they are seen as more than just workers. It creates a sense of camaraderie and lets them know that someone knows and cares about what they are going through.

Conclusion

Our world has begun to experience situations that most people have never dealt with before in recent years. There are unprecedented levels of stress, loss, worry, and uncertainty. Empathetic leadership is essential if society is going to recover. It is a type of leadership that will exponentially improve the future by connecting people in a more personal, more human way. Showing genuine empathy and care for those who are an essential part of your company, organization, etc., is a healthy and healing tool that will benefit the leader and the team they oversee.

Key Elements of Creative Problem Solving

Creativity is a skill that is often undervalued in the workplace. This blog post will focus on three key elements of creative problem solving: imagination, divergent thinking, and convergent thinking. Understanding these concepts can help you become more creative when faced with difficult decisions or issues at work!

Clarify and Identify The Problem

First, you need to clarify and identify the problem. This is often a difficult step as people tend to jump straight into brainstorming ideas before fully understanding their goal or aim for this project.

Brainstorm Ideas. Creativity involves generating lots of different solutions for your specific issue/problem. Try listing out all possible options without judgment or evaluation.

Evaluate and Choose. After brainstorming, you can evaluate each idea through a series of criteria, such as how realistic it is or whether it fits with the project’s budget. You should choose an option that best addresses your goal for this particular task. It may not be possible to do everything on your original list, so it is essential to consider what you want the project’s overall outcome to be and choose options that fit with this.

Research the Problem

You should also consider doing some research into your options and the process of implementing them. This may involve looking at other similar projects, speaking to individuals who have experience in this area, or finding out more about what is feasible given the time frame/budget you are working with. According to the article The Basics of Creative Problem Solving it is better to research the problem.

Formulate Creative Challenges

You should also consider how to formulate creative challenges from your chosen option. These may involve finding out what is stopping this process from working as well as it could, asking others for their suggestions, or brainstorming alternatives to your original options.

Generate and Combine Ideas

Finally, you should generate and combine different ideas from your brainstorming sessions. This will provide a range of options to choose from and provide inspiration for other projects or issues that may arise in the future!

Draw a Plan

After you have chosen the best option for your project, draw up a plan to implement it. This should include key milestones and an estimated timescale and budget involved.

Execute Plan

Once you have drawn up your plan, it is time to implement it. You should monitor progress against the milestones set out in your initial strategy and make any adjustments that are needed along the way.

How Good Leaders Problem Solve

Great leaders can analyze problems, respond swiftly, and challenge their team members to find solutions. Here is a list of some of the ways a great leader can solve problems effectively.

1. Communicate Openly

Great leaders are universally known as good communicators. They communicate clearly and concisely in a way that their people understand. They take time to explain their plans and objectives to those around them so their followers can understand what is expected of them.

2. Take initiative

Great leaders don’t wait for others to work on a problem. They take decisive action and solve problems themselves. They may do so in the best manner for them, whether that means delegating to their team members or taking personal responsibility for the outcome.

3. Analyze Problem Areas

Great leaders know that one of the greatest assets they have is their team members. They take it upon themselves to examine areas where problems with their organization may exist and run ideas past those under them.

4. Find Solutions

Great leaders are not afraid to try new things. They know that sometimes the best solutions come from innovative thinking and the creative ideas of their people. They actively work with their team members to find answers.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Make a Mistake

Mistakes are the portals of discovery. They represent the way a great leader thinks and chooses to act. They are not afraid of making mistakes; instead, they realize that learning from mistakes and adjusting accordingly separates them from the competition.

6. Always Have a Strategy of Action

Great leaders remain active in all areas of their organization. They are always searching for new ways to increase productivity, efficiency, and profitability.

7. A Strong Foundational Plan

Great leaders are always working towards a goal, but they spend time developing the foundational plan to help achieve that goal. They make decisions today that will lead them to their future goals.

8. Make Their Directions Clear

Great leaders share their vision with their team members in the most straightforward way possible. They take time to model how decisions are made and what is expected of them in the future.

Conclusion

Great leaders are not perfect. They make mistakes. The difference is that they aren’t afraid to admit to them and learn from them. They give their team members the tools and resources they need to succeed.

How Emotional Intelligence Cultivates Better Leadership

Leadership is essential to a successful enterprise, especially with so many people working remotely. While many people in leadership have technical skills, some of them lack emotional intelligence, or the ability to efficiently handle emotional interpersonal relationships.

Fortunately, this is an important skill that can be learned. Here are some simple techniques to lead with emotional intelligence and create the perfect work environment.

Be honest.

When someone has people working directly underneath them, honesty is key. For one, everyone should know their role and how well they’re performing. It’s also important for leadership to be honest with themselves. If someone realizes they’ve made a mistake, they have to be honest enough to correct it without slowing the team down.

Practice empathy whenever possible.

Leaders must learn that life happens. If an employee works from home and their children are home from school, show some understanding if they accidentally pop into a conference call. Handle a situation based on the preferred response if the roles were reversed. Employees that feel their bosses care about them care more about their jobs, especially in emergency situations.

Be self-aware.

Self-awareness and emotional intelligence go hand-in-hand. The most successful leaders consider practicing self-awareness an asset because it has a direct correlation with how efficiently they’ll perform tasks. For example, if a boss is angry or upset, they’re less likely to give logical advice to their subordinates.

If possible, take a few minutes everyday to address any lingering feelings. This makes going into the workday with a clear mind easier.

Prioritize frequent communication.

Want to keep staff informed on business standards? Be sure to regularly speak with them. Whether it’s time for an update or a modification, keeping staff in the loop is crucial. Remember, quality is just as important as quantity. Speak with staff concisely and allow them to ask relevant questions to boost clarity.

Leaders with technical knowledge is beneficial. People who take the initiative to develop their emotional intelligence are better built for success. Even if it takes some time to craft each skill, creating this symbiotic relationship between the two boosts the productivity and moral of every participating employee.

4 Tips for Communicating Effectively with Your Team Remotely

Having the right communication skills is essential for being a part of any organization. Even with great communication skills, communicating with a team remotely can be challenging. Words can be misinterpreted, creating misunderstandings and conflicts amongst the group.

Although writing skills are essential when communicating with a team, it is not enough. Below are four practical skills for effective communication with a team remotely.

Set Up Communication Guidelines

For effective communication with a remote team, guidelines are essential. Precise guidelines give the team a clear message on what should be done at a particular time and how to go about it.

Guidelines could indicate that Slack can be used for chatting, and email for official communication. The guidelines can point out what language to be used for communication and that messages should be sent during working hours.

Use Simple Language to Communicate

When communicating with a team remotely, use simple and direct words. Using the right words to pass a message to a team member reduces misinterpretation and time lost trying to respond. Therefore, for someone to qualify for a remote team member, they should have quality writing skills. Active language and triple checking what has been written should be done before sending an official message.

Think Critically

Before sending an official message to a team member remotely, the person receiving the message should be considered. Different people convey messages differently; therefore, it is crucial to learn how each team member communicates and adapts to their style. Asking for feedback is a smart way of knowing if the message was received as intended.

Creating An Office Hangout Culture Online

If the team entirely operates remotely, it can get boring. Members of the team might be having a hard time communicating due to a lack of an emotional connection. Employees could hang out after work online to have random chats over coffee or play games virtually. Celebrations and happy hour will make the members feel valued and increase productivity.

For a team to work effectively remotely, proper skills and tools should be employed. An organization can incorporate some technological tools to ease communication amongst the team members.

Purple People: Their Importance in Business Technology

If someone said to you, “Steve Jobs was a purple person,” you would probably look at them like they were crazy. Saying somebody is “purple” or talking about purple people is just another way of describing people who have a mind for business and technology. They are a combination of “red” people, who are technologically-minded, and “blue” people, who are business-minded. Having purple people in your business is more than just convenient; in today’s tech-based world, where technology is starting to outpace a human’s ability to keep up, having purple people is essential.

That agility to keep up with technology and make it work for business is crucial to success. It will only become more critical as technology advances. They can also act as a bridge between the red people and the blue people, translating for each side. They often end up being leaders of a company because of their expansive knowledge, which is good because purple people often hire other purple people. Furthermore, red and blue people often distrust and disrespect each other because they don’t comprehend the importance of the other’s position and all the hard work they must do to keep the business running. Purple people understand both sides, so they don’t have that problem.

How To Be An Employee-Centric Leader

A company’s employees can make or break an organization. Motivated employees can take a company to new heights, while lazy ones can cause bankruptcy. Unfortunately, many companies fail because they spend too much time focusing on shareholders, the C-Suite, or the customer and not enough time to develop their employees. If you find yourself in a leadership position, there are some things you can do to help your employees shine. Here is how to be an employee-centric leader.

Why be employee-centric?

As we mentioned earlier, employees can make or break a company, but there are other benefits. For example, by focusing on building interpersonal relationships between employees and leadership, you can increase employees’ satisfaction with management and the job itself. This means employees will work harder at their job and stay with the company longer, reducing the turnover rate and how much time and money you must spend on training new employees.

Reinforce the positives

Organizations are built on rules and regulations. When an employee breaks or violates one of these rules or regulations, the first instinct could be to scold them. But an employee-centric leader would instead ask why the employee broke the rules. For example, consider this story about a man who came into work for an early meeting dressed shoddily and was criticized by an executive. The executive didn’t take the time to find out why the employee was underdressed, which was that they had just come from a hospital after their child had an accident and didn’t want to be late for the meeting. Instead, they chose to be on time rather than be late and appropriately dressed. An employee-centric leader would praise their dedication to being punctual, not their perceived neglect in how they looked.

Follow the Five C’s

The Five C’s of being an employee-centric leader are Commitment, Care, Communication, Celebration, and Community. Commitment comes first because you have to be committed to your employees’ development and the other four C’s to see them grow. Then comes Care because you have to have empathy and kindness to foster those interpersonal relationships. Communication is, of course, important in any organization, and Celebration is about giving them credit for their hard work so they understand how vital their contributions are. Finally, there’s Community. Many organizations like to pay lip service to being a “family,” but few organizations practice what they preach. Ensure your organization is one of the few that walks the walk and makes their business a community.

How Leadership Impacts Everyday Life

Whether you want to or not, there are times in life when you have to step up and be a leader. Even if you’re not in charge at your company or school, stepping into those moments as a leader will positively impact your everyday life. It will teach you valuable skills like self-discipline, listening to others, and inspiring and empowering others. These are just a few of the ways that leadership impacts everyday life.

Self-discipline

Being a leader requires self-discipline, which is a valuable skill to learn for nearly every aspect of your life. Leaders have to be cool, calm, and in control of themselves and the situation at hand. They also have to be able to meet deadlines and deal with other people. Learning self-discipline is a leadership skill that can help you with everything from paying your bills on time to living a healthy lifestyle.

Listening to others

A good leader has to listen to the people they lead, and that’s another skill that is a great benefit to have in real life. Getting feedback from others is essential to self-improvement, and listening to others also makes you more approachable and likable. Friendships are built on conversations, and half of a conversation is listening.

Inspire and Empower

This third point may not seem like a valuable skill to have if you’re not a leader but think about it more. How often are you faced with a grieving or just sad friend you want to cheer up? Or a friend who’s a little lost about what to do? Whether you consider yourself a leader or not, anybody would like to help them out, and leadership skills can help. A good leader inspires and empowers others to take action and do their best, and good friends do that as well.

These are just some of the positive impacts of leadership skills on everyday life. Learning these and other skills won’t just look good on your resume. They can help you become a better person and a better friend and live a more fulfilling life.
